Question:
Our brother observes that some Muslims participate in Christian celebrations such as Christmas, as they call it. He requests guidance on this matter.
Answer:
It is not permissible for a Muslim, whether male or female, to participate in the festivals of Christians, Jews, or any other disbelievers. Rather, such participation must be avoided because the Prophet (peace be upon him) said: "Whoever imitates a people is one of them." Moreover, the Prophet (peace be upon him) warned us against imitating them or adopting their ways.
A believer, whether male or female, must be cautious and refrain from contributing to the observance of these celebrations in any way because they are festivals that go against the laws of Allah. They are organized by the enemies of Allah, and it is impermissible to partake in them, cooperate with their participants, or assist them in any manner—whether by offering tea, coffee, utensils, or anything else.
Allah the Almighty also says: "Help one another in righteousness and piety, but do not help one another in sin and transgression" (Surah Al-Ma'idah: 2). Participating in the festivals of disbelievers is a form of aiding in sin and transgression.
Therefore, it is obligatory for every Muslim, male and female, to refrain from such participation. A sensible person should not be swayed by the actions of others. Instead, one must adhere to Islamic law, follow what it dictates, and comply with the commands of Allah and His Messenger (peace be upon him). A believer should not be misled by the practices of the majority, as most people are heedless of what Allah has ordained. Allah says in His glorious Book: "And if you obey most of those on earth, they will mislead you from the way of Allah" (Surah Al-An'am: 116). He also says: "And most of mankind will not believe, even if you desire it eagerly" (Surah Yusuf: 103).
Customs that contradict Islamic law must not be adopted, even if widely practiced. A believer must weigh their actions and words, as well as the actions and words of others, against the Quran and the Sunnah. Whatever aligns with them is acceptable, even if the people neglect it, and whatever contradicts them is rejected, even if the people practice it.
