Question: Is running a red light considered haram (forbidden)? Please provide a fatwa.
Answer: Yes, running a red light is forbidden because it poses a danger. One might run the light and either hit someone or be hit, which endangers lives and can lead to death. It is harmful to Muslims and also goes against the orders of the authority who established this rule for public safety.
Therefore, it is not permissible due to the many dangers involved. At the very least, it is a violation of the authority’s order, which was made for the benefit of Muslims. Obeying the authority in matters that benefit Muslims is obligatory. This is one of the greatest benefits for Muslims, and it is dangerous as one might think they are safe but end up causing or being involved in an accident.
