Definition of Hadith Qudsi

The Qudsi Hadiths are those narrated by the Prophet May God bless him and grant him peace from his Lord, the Almighty. They are called Qudsi (sacred) because they are from the words of the Lord, and they are like the Quran in that they are the words of Allah, but the Quran is a continuous miracle. People are commanded to purify themselves when touching the Quran, and the Quran is miraculous as it is the word of Allah.

As for the Qudsi Hadiths, they are the words of the Lord, but they do not have the same ruling as the Quran in terms of the necessity of purification when touching them. They are a different kind of divine speech, not the continuous miracle of the Prophet May God bless him and grant him peace, which is a sign of prophethood. The words of the Lord in the Qudsi Hadiths are divine and uncreated, but they are not of the same nature as the Quran. The Quran is a continuous miracle that proves the truthfulness of the Prophet May God bless him and grant him peace and has different rulings from the Qudsi Hadiths.

An example of a Qudsi Hadith is what is authentically reported from Abu Dharr Glory be to Him from the Prophet May God bless him and grant him peace, who said: Allah Glory be to Him says: “O My servants! I have forbidden oppression for Myself and have made it forbidden among you, so do not oppress one another. O My servants! All of you are astray except those whom I have guided, so seek guidance from Me and I shall guide you. O My servants! All of you are naked except those whom I have clothed, so seek clothing from Me and I shall clothe you. O My servants! All of you are hungry except those whom I have fed, so seek food from Me and I shall feed you. O My servants! You commit sins by night and by day, and I forgive all sins, so seek forgiveness from Me and I shall forgive you. O My servants! You will not be able to harm Me so as to harm Me, and you will not be able to benefit Me so as to benefit Me. O My servants! If the first of you and the last of you, and the humans of you and the jinn of you, were as pious as the most pious heart of any one man among you, that would not increase My Kingdom in anything. O My servants! If the first of you and the last of you, and the humans of you and the jinn of you, were as wicked as the most wicked heart of any one man among you, that would not decrease My Kingdom in anything. O My servants! If the first of you and the last of you, and the humans of you and the jinn of you, were to stand in one place and ask of Me, and I were to give everyone what he requested, that would not decrease what I have, any more than a needle decreases the sea if put into it. O My servants! It is but your deeds that I reckon up for you and then recompense you for. So, he who finds good, let him praise Allah, and he who finds other than that, let him blame no one but himself.” This hadith is recorded by Imam Muslim in his Sahih.

This great hadith is called a Qudsi Hadith, and it indicates great benefits from the words of the Lord, as you have heard, dear listeners.

It is a great Qudsi Hadith indicating the prohibition of oppression and the need for servants to rely on their Lord, as they are in need of Him. He is the one who guides whom He wills, feeds whom He wills, enriches whom He wills, and impoverishes whom He wills. He is the one who forgives sins and conceals faults, the Almighty. He is independent of His servants; they cannot harm Him nor benefit Him. He is independent of them, and their sins do not decrease Him nor do their acts of obedience benefit Him. Rather, their acts of obedience benefit them, and their sins harm them.

As for Him, their acts of obedience do not benefit Him nor increase His Kingdom in anything, just as the sins of people do not decrease Him nor harm Him in anything. Then He explains that if the servants were to gather in one place and ask their Lord for all their needs, it would not decrease what He has in anything, for His treasures are full and nothing diminishes them.

Then He explains that the essence and summary is that their deeds are counted by the Lord, the Almighty, for them, and then He recompenses them for them, meaning their rewards if they are good or their punishment if they are bad. Therefore, He said: “So, he who finds good, let him praise Allah who guided him to His obedience and helped him, and he who finds other than that, let him blame no one but himself because he neglected, wasted, and followed his desires and the devil. There is no power and no strength except with Allah.”
