“The People of the Book used to read the Torah in Hebrew and explain it in Arabic to the Muslims. The Messenger of Allah (peace be upon him) said: ‘Do not believe the People of the Book nor disbelieve them, but say: {We believe in Allah and what has been revealed to us} [Al-Baqarah: 136].’”
Narrated by Abu Huraira | Authenticated by Al-Bukhari | Source: Sahih Al-Bukhari Page or Number: 4485 | Authenticity: [Sahih (Authentic)] Classification: Unique to Al-Bukhari from Muslim "Allah, the Exalted, revealed the Quran as a judge over the previous scriptures and laws; its laws and rulings are decisive over all previous laws. The previous heavenly books were subjected to distortion; the Jews distorted the Torah, and the Christians distorted the Gospel and further distorted the Torah.
In this hadith, the Prophet (peace be upon him) warns his Ummah against being deceived by what the People of the Book narrate from their books. Abu Huraira (may Allah be pleased with him) informs us that the Jews during the time of the Prophet (peace be upon him) used to read the Torah in Hebrew, which is the language of the Jews, and interpret and translate it into Arabic for the Muslims. The Prophet (peace be upon him) said: ‘Do not believe the People of the Book nor disbelieve them,’ which applies to what is not known to be true or false.
This is because Allah commanded us to believe in what was revealed to us in the Quran and what was revealed to them in their book. However, we have no way of knowing the truth of what they narrate from those books unless it is clarified in our Shariah. Therefore, we neither believe them, lest we become partners with them in what they have distorted, nor do we disbelieve them, lest it be true, and we end up denying what we were commanded to believe. The Prophet (peace be upon him) commanded us to say: {We believe in Allah and what has been revealed to us and what was revealed to Abraham, Ishmael, Isaac, Jacob, and the Tribes, and what was given to Moses and Jesus, and what was given to the prophets from their Lord. We make no distinction between any of them, and we are Muslims in sub mission to Him} [Al-Baqarah: 136].
As for what is known to be false from what the Jews and Christians narrate, such as their fabrications against Allah and His Messenger, the Muslim has no choice but to disbelieve them in what they say.
In the hadith: The Muslim, in general, believes in what all the prophets of Allah brought and only believes what is in accordance with the Noble Quran and the Sunnah of the Prophet (peace be upon him)."
